In the Beginning

The Seven Days of Creation

I

And there was light.

"God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light."

Genesis 1:3

II

The waters divide. The sky is born.

"God said, 'Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, that it may separate water from water.'"

Genesis 1:6

III

Dry land appears. The oceans take their place.

"God said, 'Let the water below the sky be gathered into one area, that the dry land may appear.' And it was so."

Genesis 1:9

IV

Sun. Moon. Stars. Time begins.

"God made the two great lights, the greater light to dominate the day and the lesser light to dominate the night, and the stars."

Genesis 1:16

V

The waters teem with life. Wings fill the sky.

"God said, 'Let the water bring forth swarms of living creatures, and birds that fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.'"

Genesis 1:20

VI

Every creature finds its place — and humankind is formed in the image of God.

"And God created humankind in the divine image, creating it in the image of God—creating them male and female."

Genesis 1:27

VII

Creation rests. The seventh day is holy.

"And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy—having ceased on it from all the work of creation that God had done."
