Privacy Policy
Living Tanach is a personal project: a weekly story from the Tanach, told through the Hebrew text, a translation, and original imagery. It is operated by Ariel Remer from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
This policy explains what the site collects, why, where it goes, and what you can ask for. It is short because the site does very little. There is no account to create, nothing to buy, and no advertising anywhere on it.
If you want something removed, write to hello@livingtanach.com and say so. You do not need to give a reason.
What we collect
Your email address, if you subscribe. The subscribe form on the story pages asks for an email address and nothing else. No name, no location, no birthday.
What you send through the contact form. Your name, your email address, the category you pick (story request, media inquiry, partnership, or general), and your message.
Basic technical information, automatically. Like most websites, this one records information about the visit itself: the pages viewed, the approximate region the request came from, the referring page, and the browser and device type. This comes from Google Analytics and Vercel Analytics, described below.
That is the complete list. The site does not ask for a phone number, a mailing address, a photograph, a payment method, or a date of birth, and it has no login.
Why we collect it
Your email address is used for one purpose: sending you the weekly story email, and a welcome message when you first subscribe. It is not used for anything else and it is not shared with anyone for their own purposes.
Your contact form message is used to read and answer what you sent.
Technical information is used to understand which stories people read and how they find the site, so the next ones are better. It is not used to build a profile of you or to target advertising.
Under Canadian privacy law your consent is what permits this collection. You give it by choosing to subscribe or by choosing to write. You can withdraw it at any time, as described under Your choices.
Who else handles it
The site is small and depends on a handful of services. Each of them is located in the United States, which means your information is stored on servers outside Canada and is subject to the laws of the United States, including lawful access requests by US authorities. - Resend holds the subscriber list and sends the emails, including the contact form messages. Its privacy policy is at https://resend.com/legal/privacy-policy
- Vercel hosts the site, runs the forms, and provides Vercel Analytics. Its privacy policy is at https://vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy
- Google provides Google Analytics and serves the fonts used on the site. Loading a page requests those fonts from Google, which reveals your IP address to Google even if you never interact with anything. Google's privacy policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Cloudflare serves an animation library used on the story pages, through its cdnjs service, which likewise reveals your IP address to Cloudflare. Its privacy policy is at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/
Nothing is sold. Nothing is rented. The subscriber list is not shared with other publishers, traded, or used for anyone else's marketing. Information may be disclosed if the law requires it, which has not happened.
Cookies and analytics
Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to tell repeat visits apart. Vercel Analytics does not use cookies and does not track visitors between sites.
There is no cookie banner on this site. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and you can install Google's opt-out extension at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout to stop Google Analytics entirely. Blocking either one does not break anything on the site.
The site does not run advertising pixels. There is no Meta pixel, no Google Ads tag, no Pinterest tag, and no retargeting of any kind.
About the subject matter
Living Tanach publishes Jewish religious content. Subscribing to it suggests an interest in that subject, and that inference exists whether or not anyone acts on it. The site does not ask about your religion, your affiliation, or your observance, does not record any such thing, and does not group or segment subscribers by anything at all. Everyone on the list receives the same story.
How long it is kept
Your email address stays on the subscriber list until you unsubscribe or ask to be removed, at which point it comes off.
Messages sent through the contact form stay in the hello@livingtanach.com mailbox after they are answered. There is no automatic deletion schedule for them today. If you would rather your message not be kept, say so in it or write afterwards and it will be deleted.
Google Analytics retains its data according to the setting on the analytics property, currently the Google default of fourteen months, after which it is deleted automatically.
Your choices
Unsubscribing. Every email from Living Tanach, including the welcome message, has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. It works immediately and takes one click, with nothing to fill in and no reason to give. Gmail and Apple Mail also show their own unsubscribe control on these emails, and that works too. If you would rather just write, hello@livingtanach.com does the same thing.
Asking what is held about you. Write to hello@livingtanach.com and you will be told what is on file, which for nearly everyone is an email address and nothing more. You will get an answer within thirty days.
Correcting it. If something is wrong, ask and it will be fixed.
Deleting it. Ask and it will be deleted. There is no business record that needs keeping and no reason to argue about it.
Complaining. If you are not satisfied with how a request was handled, you can bring a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at https://www.priv.gc.ca or by calling 1-800-282-1376.
Children
Living Tanach is written for a general audience and the stories are suitable for families, but the site is not directed at children and there is no reason for a child to subscribe rather than a parent. Information is not knowingly collected from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has subscribed, write to hello@livingtanach.com and the address will be removed.
Security
The site holds very little, which is the most useful security measure available to it. What it does hold sits with established providers behind their own access controls, and the site itself is served entirely over HTTPS. No site can promise that nothing will ever go wrong. If a breach ever created a real risk of significant harm, affected subscribers and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada would be notified as soon as feasible.
Links to other sites
Story pages link out to other websites from time to time. Those sites have their own privacy practices and this policy does not cover them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the effective date at the top will change and the new version will be posted here. Continuing to use the site after that means the updated policy applies.
