גִּדְעוֹן

Gidon

An angel sits beneath the oak, and finds him threshing in hiding.

וַיָּבֹא מַלְאַךְ ה' וַיֵּשֶׁב תַּחַת הָאֵלָה אֲשֶׁר בְּעׇפְרָה אֲשֶׁר לְיוֹאָשׁ אֲבִי הָעֶזְרִי וְגִדְעוֹן בְּנוֹ חֹבֵט חִטִּים בַּגַּת לְהָנִיס מִפְּנֵי מִדְיָן׃

שופטים ו:יא

"The angel of Hashem came and sat beneath the oak in Ophrah, which belonged to Yoash the Abiezrite, while his son Gidon was threshing wheat in the winepress to hide it from Midian."

Judges 6:11

Too afraid to act by day, he tears down the altar by night.

וַיִּקַּח גִּדְעוֹן עֲשָׂרָה אֲנָשִׁים מֵעֲבָדָיו וַיַּעַשׂ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֵלָיו ה' וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר יָרֵא אֶת־בֵּית אָבִיו וְאֶת־אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר מֵעֲשׂוֹת יוֹמָם וַיַּעַשׂ לָיְלָה׃

שופטים ו:כז

"Gidon took ten men from among his servants and did as Hashem had told him; but because he feared his father's house and the men of the town too much to do it by day, he did it by night."

Judges 6:27

He lays a fleece on the threshing floor, and asks for one more sign.

הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי מַצִּיג אֶת־גִּזַּת הַצֶּמֶר בַּגֹּרֶן אִם־טַל יִהְיֶה עַל־הַגִּזָּה לְבַדָּהּ וְעַל־כָּל־הָאָרֶץ חֹרֶב וְיָדַעְתִּי כִּי־תוֹשִׁיעַ בְּיָדִי אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ׃

שופטים ו:לז

"Behold, I am placing a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece, while all the ground remains dry, then I will know that You will save Israel through me, as You have spoken."

Judges 6:37

Three hundred lap the water, and the rest are sent home.

וַיְהִי מִסְפַּר הַמְלַקְקִים בְּיָדָם אֶל־פִּיהֶם שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת אִישׁ וְכֹל יֶתֶר הָעָם כָּרְעוּ עַל־בִּרְכֵיהֶם לִשְׁתּוֹת מָיִם׃

שופטים ז:ו

"The number of those who lapped, bringing their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; and all the rest of the people knelt on their knees to drink water."

Judges 7:6

The jars shatter, the torches blaze, and three hundred shofars sound.

וַיִּתְקְעוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת הָרָאשִׁים בַּשּׁוֹפָרוֹת וַיִּשְׁבְּרוּ הַכַּדִּים וַיַּחֲזִיקוּ בְיַד־שְׂמֹאולָם בַּלַּפִּדִים וּבְיַד־יְמִינָם הַשּׁוֹפָרוֹת לִתְקוֹעַ וַיִּקְרְאוּ חֶרֶב לַה' וּלְגִדְעוֹן׃

שופטים ז:כ

"The three columns blew the shofars and shattered the jars; holding the torches in their left hands and the shofars in their right hands to blow, they cried out: A sword for Hashem and for Gidon!"

Judges 7:20

The three hundred stand still, and the camp destroys itself.

וַיִּתְקְעוּ שְׁלֹשׁ־מֵאוֹת הַשּׁוֹפָרוֹת וַיָּשֶׂם ה' אֵת חֶרֶב אִישׁ בְּרֵעֵהוּ וּבְכׇל־הַמַּחֲנֶה וַיָּנׇס הַמַּחֲנֶה עַד־בֵּית הַשִּׁטָּה צְרֵרָתָה עַד שְׂפַת־אָבֵל מְחוֹלָה עַל־טַבָּת׃

שופטים ז:כב

"The three hundred shofars sounded, and Hashem set every man's sword against his fellow throughout the camp; and the camp fled as far as Beis Shittah toward Tzererah, up to the edge of Avel Mecholah by Tabbas."
