קין והבל

Kayin and Hevel: The First Murder

The fire took one offering and not the other.

וְהֶבֶל הֵבִיא גַם הוּא מִבְּכֹרוֹת צֹאנוֹ וּמֵחֶלְבֵהֶן וַיִּשַׁע ה' אֶל הֶבֶל וְאֶל מִנְחָתוֹ׃

בראשית ד:ד

"And Hevel also brought, from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat. And Hashem turned to Hevel and to his offering."

Bereishis 4:4

Two walked out into the field. One walked back.

וַיֹּאמֶר קַיִן אֶל הֶבֶל אָחִיו וַיְהִי בִּהְיוֹתָם בַּשָּׂדֶה וַיָּקׇם קַיִן אֶל הֶבֶל אָחִיו וַיַּהַרְגֵהוּ׃

בראשית ד:ח

"And Kayin spoke to Hevel his brother, and when they were in the field Kayin rose against Hevel his brother and killed him."

Bereishis 4:8

His blood cried out from the ground.

וַיֹּאמֶר מֶה עָשִׂיתָ קוֹל דְּמֵי אָחִיךָ צֹעֲקִים אֵלַי מִן הָאֲדָמָה׃

בראשית ד:י

"And He said: What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground."

Bereishis 4:10

The ground would not give him its strength.

כִּי תַעֲבֹד אֶת הָאֲדָמָה לֹא תֹסֵף תֵּת כֹּחָהּ לָךְ נָע וָנָד תִּהְיֶה בָאָרֶץ׃

בראשית ד:יב

"When you work the ground it shall not continue to give you its strength. You shall be a wanderer and a drifter in the earth."
