They come to the mountain, and camp before it.
וַיִּסְעוּ מֵרְפִידִים וַיָּבֹאוּ מִדְבַּר סִינַי וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר וַיִּחַן־שָׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל נֶגֶד הָהָר׃
שמות יט:ב
"They set out from Rephidim and entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel encamped there before the mountain."
Exodus 19:2
God descends in fire, and the mountain is wrapped in smoke.
וְהַר סִינַי עָשַׁן כֻּלּוֹ מִפְּנֵי אֲשֶׁר יָרַד עָלָיו ה' בָּאֵשׁ וַיַּעַל עֲשָׁנוֹ כְּעֶשֶׁן הַכִּבְשָׁן וַיֶּחֱרַד כָּל־הָהָר מְאֹד׃
שמות יט:יח
"Mount Sinai was entirely enveloped in smoke because the Lord had descended upon it in fire; its smoke rose like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently."
Exodus 19:18
Moshe enters the cloud, and climbs the mountain.
וַיָּבֹא מֹשֶׁה בְּתוֹךְ הֶעָנָן וַיַּעַל אֶל־הָהָר וַיְהִי מֹשֶׁה בָּהָר אַרְבָּעִים יוֹם וְאַרְבָּעִים לָיְלָה׃
שמות כד:יח
"Moses entered into the cloud and ascended the mountain; and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights."
Exodus 24:18
Below, they melt their gold into a calf.
וַיִּקַּח מִיָּדָם וַיָּצַר אֹתוֹ בַּחֶרֶט וַיַּעֲשֵׂהוּ עֵגֶל מַסֵּכָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלֶּה אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלוּךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם׃
שמות לב:ד
"He took it from their hands, formed it with an engraving tool, and fashioned it into a molten calf; and they said, 'This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'"
Exodus 32:4
He sees it, and the tablets shatter at his feet.
וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר קָרַב אֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶה וַיַּרְא אֶת־הָעֵגֶל וּמְחֹלֹת וַיִּחַר־אַף מֹשֶׁה וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ מִיָּדָיו אֶת־הַלֻּחֹת וַיְשַׁבֵּר אֹתָם תַּחַת הָהָר׃
שמות לב:יט
"As he drew near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger blazed, and he hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain."
